TRACK REVIEW: UNBREAKABLE by OF MICE AND MEN

By Gregor Farquharson (@gregoratlantic)

When lead vocalist Austin Carlile left Of Mice And Men in December 2016, no one knew the direction the band was going to take. With no apparent lead vocalist replacement, the band confirmed that Bassist and clean vocalist Aaron Pauley would be taking over as both clean and harsh vocals. On the 23rd of April 2017, we got a new look into the new era of Of Mice And Men.

The track Unbreakable debuted live on the Radio 1 Rock Show and was instantly met with love from the fans. Immediately we can hear a much heavier side of the band, and it is clear just how much of a massive impact Pauley’s vocals are throughout the track.  A heavy riff and immense drumming open the track, with Pauley’s screams surprising fans, who didn’t think they would hear an OMAM song with this style of vocals again. Pauley’s clean vocals are something fans have grown to love, and this is absolutely no exception throughout the track.

The harsh vocals are hard to ignore, as Pauley beautifully manages to blend both harsh and clean seamlessly, while also having the duties of a bass player. Huge moments such as the continuous shouts of “I’ll never break”, are clearly made to be shouted by hundreds of fans. The breakdown is a definite highlight of the track, with the vocals quietening, before a short silence into a heavy scream, perfect for a wall of death, a custom at any OMAM gig, The track ends with a faded outcry of the lyric “I will remain” before ending completely. The track itself is an insane comeback of the back of 2016s effort Cold World, and the band are definitely not lost heading into the future.

8.5/10
