TRACK OF THE WEEK: Echo Valley – SONG IDEA ONE

With a total change in sound, Echo Valley evolve into something scarily good on SONG IDEA ONE

Last time we met Ayrshire lads Echo Valley, they were kicking off the New Year the only way they can: filling up King Tuts with hundreds of folk, hitting out with some new tracks that gave fans a taste of the direction the band were going. No more indie rock band comparisons, in the words of member Liam McCluskey “we don’t want to fucking sound like Arctic Monkeys”, as the band honed the grittier and more alluring sound they had initially planned which has now been cemented with the arrival of SONG IDEA ONE.

Accompanied by a homemade VHS looking music video, the new track is simply dripping with grunge and punk rock influences. While keeping things relatively steady for the verses, following the enticing bassline that begins the track, the chorus is where things take on a whole new life. Everything feels like it’s been turned up to 11 with a whirlwind of ballistic guitars and drums, the latter packing that extra punch to the already powerful force SONG IDEA ONE is packing.

While comparisons can be made to an array of different artists, Echo Valley manage to amalgamate all these influences into their own unique thing. You can feel the grand scale galvanised by many of the rock bands they admire and the lyrics are simultaneously dark and slick like punk outfits of the past yet both combine to create something utterly refreshing.

I can’t help but reiterate a quote made by Shaun McCluskey during my interview with the band that sums it all up perfectly: “Be yourself unless you’re a dick”. Echo Valley are doing exactly that and whether or not you think the latter half of that quote is true, you’ll be lapping up this track in no time at all.
